Ken Kutaragi, known as the father of PlayStation, ran Sony's games business through the PS1, PS2 and PS3. Asked about Sony ending game discs, he took Sony's side. From January 2028, new PlayStation games will only come out in digital form. Games released on disc before that are not affected. Kutaragi says he really understands that a disc has become a way of saying you own a game, "but nobody thinks it's necessary for a networked device like a smartphone", so for him it's a mentality, and keeping discs isn't economically reasonable. He went further and said at some point "we won't need any console", then added that this isn't an official comment from Sony. He left Sony in 2007. My problem with the phone comparison: nobody buys something on their phone expecting to still have it in twenty years. That's what a disc was for.
